Why Become a Portuguese Citizen?

Holding a Portuguese passport opens up a world of advantages, especially for individuals from countries like Brazil and other non-EU nations. Here are some key benefits:

Freedom to live and work across the EU
As a Portuguese citizen, you can live, study, and work not only in Portugal but in any of the 27 EU member states—without the need for additional visas or permits.

Visa-free travel
Portugal’s passport is one of the most powerful globally, granting visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to over 190 countries.

Access to education and healthcare
Citizens benefit from Portugal’s excellent public healthcare system and gain access to university education in Portugal and across Europe, often at lower tuition rates.

Property ownership and business
Citizenship simplifies the process of buying property and starting a business in Portugal.

Dual citizenship
Portugal allows dual citizenship, which means you don’t have to renounce your original nationality—provided your home country allows it.

Inheritance for future generations
Citizenship can be passed on to your children, helping build long-term family benefits.

Who Can Apply for Portuguese Citizenship?

Portuguese nationality law offers several routes to citizenship, catering to a wide variety of applicants:

1. By Descent (Parents or Grandparents)

If you have a Portuguese parent or grandparent, you may be entitled to citizenship. Grandchildren must show effective ties to the Portuguese community, such as basic knowledge of the Portuguese language (A2 level).

2. By Marriage or Long-Term Partnership

Spouses or partners of Portuguese citizens can apply for citizenship after three years of marriage or stable union. Residency in Portugal is not required for this pathway.

3. By Naturalisation

Foreign nationals can apply for citizenship after five years of legal residency in Portugal, following the revised Nationality Law. This includes students, professionals, or anyone holding a valid residence permit.

4. Through the Golden Visa (Investment)

High-net-worth individuals can invest in Portugal—whether through real estate, funds, or cultural projects—and eventually apply for citizenship through the Golden Visa program, subject to evolving legislation.
